MOD leadership supports military sportsmen and women, DUKLA Military Sports Centre has received record investments over this decade

Maximum efforts are made by the current MOD leadership to make sure that athletes of the DUKLA Banská Bystrica Military Sports Centre can benefit from high quality training conditions. This is evidenced by the biggest investments the department has made in the last decade in an effort to build new parts of the Military Sports Centre and modernise equipment and sports facilities.

On increased investments in Defence sports, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Sportsmen and women of our Military Sports Centre are the pride of Slovakias top class sports, while at the same time being great ambassadors of the military profession before the general public. However, we are fully aware that what they need in order to give excellent performances and represent Slovakia is, besides a stable background, modern equipment.” For the last three years, the overhead costs for the Centre and its personnel, including salaries, insurance premium payments, travel expenses, construction works and purchases of land, equipment, tools, instruments, devices and other related expenses, have amounted to over €23 million.

As well as modernising sports equipment, the MOD wants to improve the training conditions for sportsmen and women by reconstructing the DUKLA Athletics Stadium. It will comply with the current technical standards and meet the criteria of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) for international and national competitions. The reconstruction project proposal has already been approved by the SVK Government.

Several Olympians and world champions are members of the DUKLA Banská Bystrica Military Sports Centre. Among them is skier Petra Vlhová who staked a claim to the Alpine Skiing World Champion title in the giant slalom discipline in February 2019 and she is sure to clinch 2nd place at least at the current FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Championships. And three-time Olympian Anastasiya Kuzmina, biathlete of the DUKLA Military Sports Centre, became the world biathlon champion in the women’s 7.5km sprint at the beginning of 2019. Sportsmen and women of the DUKLA Military Sports Centre have earned 16 podium placements since the beginning of this year.
