Minister Gajdoš remembers 74th anniversary of Skýcov being burned down in WWII

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš remembered 74th anniversary of the Skýcov tragedy, the village being burned down by German troops in WW2. In his statement, Minister Gajdoš underlined the necessity to organise similar commemorative events and pointed to growing intolerance and extremism in society.

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Devaluation of human life, spread of racial discrimination, and intolerance have not had their final word in this era and, sadly, still find their place in todays society. Therefore, it is important for us not to forget the horrors the First and Second World Wars brought with them.”

During World War II, several partisan units were headquartered in Skýcov, situated in Zlaté Moravce County, and operated in the village’s neighbourhood. One of them was also the partisan unit formed of the village residents themselves. For this reason, the village was burnt down by Nazis on 16 March 1945, only to be liberated shortly afterwards on 30 March 1945. Later on, a memorial to the victims of the World Wars was unveiled at the village.
