Minister Gajdoš awards Petra Vlhová for successes in her best skiing season so far

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš awarded Petra Vlhová, member of the DUKLA Banská Bystrica Military Sports Centre, the most successful SVK National Team sportswoman in downhill skiing and our only world champion in this sport during a ceremony today (25 March 2019) at MOD Main Building. Head of the MOD congratulated her on her outstanding representation of Slovakia and presented her with a financial prize of €7,000 and the Minister of Defence Commemorative Medal, 1st Grade. At the ceremony, he also awarded her team members: her father Igor Vlha (he was not present at the ceremony), her brother Boris, and her coach Matej Gemza, of the DUKLA Banská Bystrica Military Sports Centre.

Being proud that Petra Vlhová is a member of the DUKLA Banská Bystrica Military Sports Centre, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “In the context of all her successes, I call Petra a star, because her performances reflect the highest credit on Slovakia, and I must confess I am her loyal friend as well, and I watch her every start whenever possible.” He continued: “At our centre we try to create a stable environment and quality training conditions for all our sportsmen and women. I believe this, combined with her toil and challenging training programme, has been reflected in her recent performances too.”

Expressing her thanks to Minister Gajdoš for the medal and the support from the MOD, Petra Vlhová said: “In essence, also thanks to you I was able to put in such performances, so thank you very much, and I will try to repeat it next year, let’s see how it works out.”

Director of the VŠC DUKLA Banská Bystrica Lt Col Roman Benčík said: “We can be truly proud that we have such a high profile sportswoman in our ranks. With her medals, Petra Vlhová has joined in with other legends who grew up at our DUKLA Banská Bystrica Military Sports Centre, such as Jozef Pribilinec, Matej Tóth, Michal Martikán, Elena Kaliská and Anastasiya Kuzmina, and I hope that just as they were successful for several years, our Petra, too, will be successful and she will bring a few more medals.

The greatest success of Petra Vlhová in the 2018/2019 season and her career is the gold medal in the women’s giant slalom at the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in Are, Sweden. During the ski season she stood on the winners’ podium as a first-place finisher 6 times and as a second-place finisher 7 times. Her overall second place in the women’s downhill skiing at the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup is a huge success as well.
