This year, too, students of secondary schools will get an opportunity to participate in the Students’ Defence Duels series, organised by the SVK MOD. The aim of this activity is to prepare young students for the defence of the State, promote patriotism and civil defence awareness, and increase students’ interest in issues on the agenda of the SVK MOD. The winning team from each region will be invited to take part in a 48-hour Army Camp event at the Training Centre Lešť.
As part of a range of the Defence Duel disciplines, students will test and compare their basic knowledge of topography, first aid, civil defence skills and physical readiness. They will also get a chance to demonstrate their knowledge of Slovak history, the present and the past, including Slovak military history and military history personalities. At the same time, the activity is an opportunity for them to meet servicemen and women and Army recruitment teams and talk about their work, Service conditions, as well as discussing the Voluntary Military Training and Active Reserves projects.
Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Soldiers will visit schools and teach students something new and motivate them to be more interested in topics relevant to the defence of the State in a captivating manner.” He emphasised that in this way the MOD seeks to fulfil the priorities of the SVK Government Manifesto and the SNS Party Manifesto. “A 48-hour Army Camp as a winning prize is truly exclusive. Only a few are allowed to enter the Training Centre Lešť and to undertake training with elite military instructors is an unforgettable experience for many,” he added, noting that this year students will learn more about General Milan Rastislav Štefánik in a quiz.
During the series, SVK Armed Forces personnel will stage dynamic and static displays, including demonstrations of Military Working Dog (MWD) handlers of Military Police (MP). The Defence Duels series will be held in Bernolákovo, Trnava, Trenčín, Nitra, Banská Bystrica, Kysucké Nové Mesto, Michalovce and Humenné. The first defence duel will see students of the Bratislava self-governing region battling it out at Combined School Bernolákovo on 3 April 2019.
