74th anniversary of liberation of Bratislava marked by commemoration ceremonies

On the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the liberation of Bratislava today (4 April 2019), commemoration ceremonies in tribute to the soldiers and civilians who died in liberating our capital city in WWII were held at the Slavín Memorial at Slavín and at the Victory Memorial in Eugen Suchoň Square. Representing the SVK MOD and Armed Forces at the ceremonies were State Secretary of the SVK MOD Marián Saloň and military leaders.

The operation to free Nazi-occupied Bratislava was launched by Soviet and Romanian divisions on 2 April 1945, with clashes with the enemy taking place directly in the city centre already on Day 2 of the operation. Between 2 and 4 April 1945, the fighting claimed 742 Soviet, 470 German and Hungarian, and 121 civilian lives. A number of buildings were burned down and damaged during the Battle of Bratislava.
