Training of Active Reserves for Mechanised Company Trebišov is culminating

This year’s first training event for soldiers of the Active Reserves (AR) is culminating at the Training Centre Lešť. On 1 April 2019, 10 men and 4 women reported to 21st Combined Mechanised Battalion Barracks in Trebišov. They were to spend the coming days at Lešť until 12 April and attend training for mechanised infantry roles, with particular focus on tactical training.

Deputy Commander of the Battalion Maj Martin Socha was pleasantly surprised at the approach the reservists had to the training, and so was 2nd Mechanised Company Commander Capt Tomáš Korobanič, who led the training. He said: “They have come from all over Slovakia. From Pezinok to eastern Slovakia. Despite this, they make a good team. They include ex-service personnel, some of them passed mandatory military service, and all of the women are graduates of Voluntary Military Training (VMT). One of them is being trained as company commander, another one as platoon commander, while the others as drivers, marksmen/operators, gunners, so practically they form an entire BVP-1 crew.”

Reservists at Lešť have already undertaken training for basic combat skills without the use of combat vehicles, theoretical tests and practical testing, a sports day, and section-level training with the use of combat vehicles. Not to be missed was a live fire exercise, where they fired a pistol, a submachine gun, a machine gun and a sniper rifle. Pte Peter Gaštan, machinegun operator, had the best shot. The native of Pezinok, employed as a project manager in civilian life, says that the last time he fired a weapon was 16 years ago, while undergoing mandatory military service in Komárno. He said: “I have come to refresh my knowledge. The Army still appeals to me, but not to the extent that I would become an active duty soldier. Yet this type of training is ideal once a year. I am pleased to have changed my office room for a military training area.” He is also happy to see that military clothing and equipment have improved over the past 16 years. He has words of praise to say about the field uniform, the modular webbing system, and the relationship between soldiers and officers. This was not the case during his period of service. From among the exercising women, Pte Katarína Pazderáková had the best shot. And Pte Andrea Pavuková achieved very good results, too. Last year the bank clerk undertook Voluntary Military Training (VMT), and because the VMT training enthralled her, she is now undergoing the training for active reservists. “Compared to the bank clerks job, it is a welcome change for me. I have extended my knowledge and skills once again. This is true this time too when we are setting up a defensive position at Jaseňov [Ash Tree]Hillwithout enemy contact, confessed Andrea.

Apart from 21st Combined Mechanised Battalion Trebišov, active reservists will also be trained across several trades at the CBRN Battalion Rožňava, Engineer Battalion Sereď, and Military Police Department Vlkanová-Hronsek.
