MOD civilian employees and military staff mark 74th anniversary of Victory over Fascism Day

On the occasion of the upcoming Victory over Fascism Day commemorations and the 74th anniversary of the end of WW2, MOD civilian employees and members of the Slovak Armed Forces gathered at the SVK MOD Club today (6 May 2019), to pay tribute to all victims who lost their lives during the bloodiest conflict in the history of mankind.
Speaking at the ceremony, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “8 May 1945 marks the end of the most horrifying and cruel war in the history of mankind thus far. Its victims experienced immense suffering, be that on the fronts or at concentration camps, which were literally the materialization of hell on earth.” He further added: “It is only up to people to make sure that the defeat fascism sustained in 1945 is permanent and that fascism, or any other evil, has no place in society.”
At the ceremony, Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko stated that the defeat of fascism and Nazism was not only a military victory, but, above all else, a victory of hope for a future free and democratic society. At the same time, he warned against growing extremism in today’s society.
Minister Gajdoš will commemorate the upcoming 74th anniversary of the end of WW2 during commemoration ceremonies at the Central Military Cemetery in Zvolen and at the Slavín Memorial in Bratislava.
