Minister Gajdoš meets with President of House of Representatives of Republic of Cyprus Demetris Syllouris

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš received President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Syllouris at MOD Main Building today (13 May 2019). On this occasion, they discussed the current issues of cooperation between both countries in the field of defence and security. During the meeting, they reviewed the long-established engagement of SVK service personnel in the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Membership of both countries in the European Union creates an excellent space for strengthening mutual cooperation, be that in the fields of joint security challenges resolution or defence cooperation. This is also evidenced by SVK soldiers’engagement in Cyprus.” He further said that 241 SVK personnel are currently deployed in Cyprus and that over 3,400 SVK personnel have rotated in and out of UNFICYP so far. “We will remain on the ground as long as it is necessary. We certainly prefer to resolve conflicts diplomatically,” emphasised Head of the MOD.
President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus D. Syllouris took the opportunity to thank for the SVK military’s role in UNFICYP and underscored the importance of peacekeepers, he said: “Peacekeeping forces are needed in Cyprus, and as much as they are the basis of stability, they are very important for resolution of problems.”
During the meeting with the President of the House of Representatives, Minister Gajdoš introduced potential areas of bilateral cooperation in the field of education and training for SVK and CYP service personnel and informed Mr Syllouris how the Slovak Republic is delivering on its commitments vis-à-vis the EU and NATO. In this context, the Minister also presented the modernization programmes of the SVK Army and the SVK Air Force as well as leading products of the SVK defence industry.
