State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Defence Róbert Ondrejcsák paid a visit on 13-14 May 2019 to Georgia, where he held a series of bilateral meetings at Georgia’s state institutions. He delivered a speech at the South Caucasus Security Forum, a high visibility conference in the South Caucasus region. On his trip to Georgia, Secretary Ondrejcsák was joined by State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs František Ružička.
Georgian partners expressed their appreciation for Slovakia’s long-standing support to the country’s territorial integrity and ambitions to join NATO and the EU. First Deputy Defence Minister of Georgia Lela Chikovani underlined the significance of practical military cooperation that benefits the transformation of the Georgian Armed Forces and their interoperability with NATO partners. She praised Slovakia’s long-term contribution to the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM Georgia) and the SVK military’s deployments on NATO exercises in Georgia. Secretary Ondrejcsák reassured First Deputy Defence Minister Chikovani that Slovakia’s position on Georgia is long lasting and unchangeable and that the SVK MOD is ready to further defence cooperation with Georgia as part of the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package (SNGP) as well as on a bilateral basis. Apart from traditional areas of cooperation, he reminded that it is also possible to exchange information and views on hybrid threats.
The SVK State Secretaries also met with Georgian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Lasha Darsalia, Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs Sophie Katsarava, and Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Committee on European Integration Tamar Khulordava. Georgia’s interest in working as a stabilising element in the region and contributing to the de-escalation of the dynamic security situation in the South Caucasus and Black Sea region resonated at the meetings. Towards this end, the GEO government is putting enormous efforts into implementing internal reform processes, developing relations with the EU and NATO, and stepping up cooperation with Ukraine and Moldova.
