Slovak soldiers will practise live firing on international Exercise Tobruq Legacy 2019

Deploying on Exercise Tobruq Legacy 2019 to Poland, members of the SVK Armed Forces will practise live firing, using the 9K38 Igla Man-Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS). Alongside SVK air defenders, troops from 19 Allied countries will participate in what is NATO’s largest Surface-Based Air Defence (SBAD) exercise in Europe.

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Our service personnel will have a unique opportunity to practise the capabilities of Surface-Based Air Defence during live firing events and so test their skills and gain more experience in this field in close cooperation with Allied partners.” He went on to add that in the coming weeks the multinational exercise in Poland will be attended by 143 SVK troops, supported by SBAD systems.

The aim of Tobruq Legacy 2019 is to train NATO personnel in the field of SBAD; practise the interoperability of individual systems and the standard operational procedures (SOPs) for conducting joint operations; and exchange experience and best practice. As TOLY19 unfolds, so do concurrently Ramstein Guard 19 and Eagle Talon 19, enabling air defenders to defend against Allied aerial platforms.

Tobruq Legacy 2019 runs from 3 to 21 June 2019 in Poland, with the training audience from Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
