OPCW inspectors are undergoing training at CBRN Defence Centre Zemianske Kostoľany

These days inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are undergoing training at the CBRN Defence Training and Testing Centre Zemianske Kostoľany. On their historically first visit to Slovakia, they were visited by Director-General of the OPCW Fernando Arias.

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Thanks to its training capabilities, our state-of-the-art Centre in Zemianske Kostoľany is ready to support the activities of international significance, as demonstrated with the use of the Centre by such an important organisation as the OPCW.” He added that Slovakia’s capabilities in the field of CBRN Defence are visible and highly valued by individual international organisations and experts in the fields of CBRN and the enforcement mechanism for the prohibition of chemical weapons.

The aim of the activity is to deliver training on detection and handling of toxic chemicals for staff members of the OPCWTechnical Secretariat. The Slovak Republic has contributed financially towards developing the OPCW’s capabilities, i.e. the construction of the Centre for Chemistry and Technology, by making a one-off donation payment of 30,000 euros.

The training for inspectors of the OPCW at the CBRN Defence Training and Testing Centre Zemianske Kostoľany is being carried out on the basis of an agreement between the SVK Ministry of Economy and the SVK Ministry of Defence. The training runs from 7-14 June 2019.
