Winners of the 22nd Military Deed of the Year Awards were announced by the Ministry of Defence during a ceremony at the MOD today (13 June 2019), honouring exceptional deeds of the servicemen and women who saved life or helped other people in need. Also recognised were those from the public who fostered positive relationships with and brought credit on the SVK Armed Forces.
Speaking at the ceremony, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said:“Deeds not words make heroes and this has been the case with the laureates of the Military Deed of the Year Awards. I am proud that, through their deeds, our servicemen and women prove that they are loyal to the military oath and that they are here for Slovak citizens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – always ready to help.”
Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security Anton Hrnko emphasised that we can be proud of many soldiers for how they approach their duties, though the conditions may not always be ideal. “They can succeed not only at home but also on the international scene, and it is essential they can act both as people and patriots,” he said.
DCHOD Maj Gen Josef Pokorný highlighted the significance of today’s event for the Armed Forces. “This afternoon is about heroism and friendship. Even in this hectic period, it is important to see that our service personnel not only perform duties, but they are also a support to all citizens,” he said.
Winner of the Rescue of Life category was 2nd Degree Private Lukáš Kucharčík, of 23rd Motorised Battalion Trebišov. Thanks to his prompt response to a road vehicle accident in June 2018, he saved the life of a young man and helped the crew of another vehicle get out shortly before it exploded.
The Assistance to the Public category was won by Sgt Martin Majer. Last year it was already for the 6th time that Sgt Majer organised a fund-raising event at the Repair Battalion Martin and donated the money to the Children’s Faculty Hospital in Banská Bystrica.
Finalists of the Friend of the Slovak Armed Forces category were Lt Gen (Rtd) Pavel Honzek and members of the Generals Club Trenčín for initiating and organising an extensive reconstruction of the Trenčín-Kubrá WWI Cemetery and helping to develop a positive relationship between the public and the Slovak Armed Forces.
This year the judges recommended to the MOD that they announce an Exceptional Award for Lt Col (Rtd) Ján Himpán, a member of the Slovak Soldiers Association Sereď and a recipient of the Kňazovický Blood Donation Plaque. In 1993, while serving as Commander of the Engineer Training Centre Sereď, he began to organise group blood donation events. He himself has donated blood 103 times for free.
