Slovak missiles over Baltic Sea

The LIVEX phase of Ex Tobruq Legacy 2019 culminated with live firing on 17 June 2019 at the Ustka Training Range, located on the coast of the Baltic Sea, Poland. Visiting the exercise along with Deputy Commander of the Slovak Air Force Brig Gen Róbert Kleštinec at the invitation of Officer Commanding the Exercise (OCE) Brig Gen Štefan Mordacz, DCHOD/COS Maj Gen Miroslav Lorinc highly praised the level and extent of the exercise.

Commenting on TOLY19, Maj Gen Miroslav Lorinc said: “I am pleased to say that the international exercise, at the birth of which we stood alongside our Czech and U.S. partners in 2015, has assumed such a great dimension. 20 NATO countries are now taking part in the exercise in Poland. I am very pleased to see NATO’s Air Force and SBAD command and specialist structures engaged actively in the exercise. That is why I highly appreciate the progress made in the operational part of the exercise, individual crews and their operational skills, and better use of assets. The exercise has culminated with final live firings. Our Slovak Air Force is represented on the exercise by members of the Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade Nitra with the 9K38 IGLA Man-Portable Air Defence Systems. The live firing results were successful and I am content with them.”

Ex Tobruq Legacy contributes significantly to enhancing the interoperability of NATO SBAD forces. Over 4,800 personnel with 1,200 pieces of equipment from 20 countries took part in the exercise unfolding at four training centres in Poland. During the LIVEX phase, 13 different SBAD systems from 8 countries fired 200 anti-aircraft (AA) missiles at various aerial targets. Deputy Commander of the Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade Nitra Lt Col Jozef Paňko, who is in command of the Slovak task force in Poland, appreciates the results the Slovak IGLA MANPADS operators achieved under daytime and nighttime conditions. They fired at targets such as the FLG 5000/M68 Illuminating Rockets, moving at the speed of 5m/s in the distance from 1km to 4km at a height of 1.7km. Among the best air defenders from the IGLA Detachment, commanded by Maj Ladislav Ostradecký, were Cpl Radovan Joneka, PFC Michal Paukej, and Pte Patrik Zábojník. Other assets from the Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade Nitra were deployed on the exercise as well, including the ST-68 MSK radar system, of the S-300PMU system, and the 2K12 KUB 2M Surface-to-Air Missile System.

Exercise Tobruq Legacy 2020, NATO’s largest SBAD exercise, will be held next year in Lithuania.
