The 139th anniversary of the birthday of one of the most prominent personalities in our contemporary history – Gen Milan Rastislav Štefánik – was marked by SVK MOD and Armed Forces officials, led by Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko, during a ceremony in his native village of Košariská.
Among Gen Štefánik’s greatest achievements was his key role in forming the Czechoslovak Resistance Movement abroad during WW1, thereby making a major contribution to the establishment of Czechoslovakia, the first common state of Czechs and Slovaks.
Milan Rastislav Štefánik was born on 21 July 1880 in Košariská. While returning from Italy, he died in a tragic air crash at the age of 39 on 4 May 1919, when his Caproni Ca.33 biplane went down close to Ivanka pri Dunaji. Perched on top of Bradlo Hill, the Tomb of M. R. Štefánik, designed by architect Dušan Jurkovič, is his final resting place.
