28 August 2019
The 75th Slovak National Uprising (SNP) Anniversary Commemorations will begin with the Cycle Company Ride from Zvolen to Banská Bystrica on 28 August. The riding contingent, dressed in historic uniforms, will form up at 12:00 in SNP Square, Zvolen and set out on the ride and pedal through local villages to their finish point at the SNP Memorial in Banská Bystrica, while accompanied by historic vehicles.
Also exactly at midday, sale of the SNP Museum 0 Euro Souvenir Banknote, 3rd limited edition, will be launched. 10,000 banknotes will be on sale and those interested can buy a maximum of 3 banknotes.
At 17:00, the remains of an unknown SNP soldier will be ceremonially entombed in the SNP Museum’s Remembrance Hall.
Starting at 18:00, the evening before the 75th SNP anniversary will conclude with a ceremonial concert by the Banská Bystrica State Opera, where the SNP Museum Awards will be presented to the personalities who actively support the SNP Museum.
29 August 2019
The 75th SNP Anniversary Commemorations will take many forms, including a military parade. In this way, too, servicemen and women want to pay tribute to the memory of the heroes who fought for the principles and ideas that today form the pillars of Slovak military traditions – the struggle for peace, democracy, equality and especially against fascism.
The MOD has a clear message that no way is the military parade meant to be a show of force or to favour military solutions to conflicts. Indeed, it is a great opportunity for SVK citizens to see the progress achieved in modernising the Armed Forces.
Over 1,500 servicemen and women, divided into more than 35 marching groups and representing the SVK Army, SVK Air Force, Special Operations Forces, Military Police, and the Armed Forces Academy Liptovský Mikuláš, will take part in the military parade. Over 200 military assets, 15 aircraft included, will be involved. 5th Special Forces Regiment paratroopers and Slovak Air Force personnel will conduct a series of parachute drops. A Military Police hotline (0904 786 159) will be set up for those who want to report any incidental damage caused by the military. The hotline will be in operation from 18:00 on 27 August until 12:00 on 30 August.
Cultural programme and side events on 29 August 2019
A WW2 Army Camp will be set up and period military vehicles and equipment will be on display in the grounds of the SNP Memorial. There will also be demonstrations of remote-controlled models of historic military vehicles. The SNP Museum will be open to the public for free after 14:00.
Novelties and interesting presentations
Among this year’s novelties are the SNP Multi-Media Exhibition, the military parade, and the evening gala programme with a video mapping projection show. The event organisers will be aided by secondary school students from the Future for Youth Civil Association. A mobile post office will sell the 75th SNP Anniversary postage stamp.
The main event organisers, i.e. the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic, the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Culture working in collaboration with the SNP Museum, have decided to make the commemorations exceptional and attract visitors from all over Slovakia to Banská Bystrica. That is why for 29 August they have prepared a rich cultural programme which is divided into two parts.
The day programme, dedicated to the National Act of Commemoration, and the evening gala programme, which will culminate with a fireworks display and a video mapping projection onto the SNP Memorial. The programme will begin with a flypast of SVK Air Force aircraft at 10:00 and a wreath-laying ceremony will follow. Still in the morning, Slovakia’s top state leaders, event organisers and partners will deliver their speeches in front of the gathered audience. As this year marks a round SNP anniversary, several foreign guests are expected to be in attendance. The speeches will be intertwined with live cultural performances. Not to be missed is the concert by Bratislava Hot Serenaders, who specialise in interpreting the jazz of the 1920s and 1930s in an authentic manner.
The military parade will be held in the afternoon, from 15:00 to 16:30. Do not miss this opportunity to see a bountiful line-up of military vehicles and the chance to be reminded of our history together with us.
The gala programme will start at 20:30 with a rich and super attractive cast. Slovak musicians such as Kristína and Miro Žbirka and Desmod Rock Band will put on entertaining musical performances at the SNP Memorial. Likewise, you can already be looking forward to Lúčnica and SĽUK folk dance ensembles. The SNP connects not only Slovaks but also many other countries that participated in WW2 insurgency operations. Let us come together to honour this significant milestone with this year’s solemn celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising.
