Service personnel will receive higher Service pay

Service personnel will receive higher Service pay. This follows from the Active Duty Soldiers State Service Amendment Act, which was approved by the Government today (21 August 2019). This is yet another move by the MOD to make Service conditions in the armed forces more attractive. To effect the resultant changes, the Amendment Act still needs the Parliament’s consent.

On the Service pay rise, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “As we announced earlier, 2019 will be the year of the soldier. Just as we are trying to provide our service personnel with latest technology to enable them to perform tasks to high standards and effectively, it applies that they must be paid adequately for their work, because they guarantee the security of the Slovak Republic uninterruptedly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

As he further explained, the Amendment Act will create realistic prerequisites for gradually halting and eliminating the declining interest in the military profession. He added:“I believe the new remuneration system for service personnel will lead to increasing the attractiveness and competitiveness of the military profession on the job market, as well as stabilising the levels of experienced, educated, trained and linguistically proficient soldiers.”

General Secretary of the MOD’s Service Office Ján Hoľko underscored that this is the MOD’s first and most decisive step to systemically fix the remuneration to be paid to service personnel. “In practice, this means Service pay will consist of two elements. It will consist of rank-based pay and appointment-based pay, whereas the latter will make up 2/3 of Service pay.Depending on the appointment held, he noted, appointment-based pay may be increased by up to 50%.

The Active Duty Soldiers State Service Amendment Act will bring several novelties. Under the new arrangements, Service pay will consist of two elements – rank-based pay and appointment-based pay. Rank-based pay will account for 1/3 and appointment-based pay for 2/3 of Service pay. At the same time, appointment-based pay in relation to the appointment and rank held may be increased by up to 50%, with one of the determinants being the character of the appointment itself. Another novelty is a year-on-year increase of 1 per cent in Service pay for every year of service.
