Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš commemorated the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1944 Slovak National Uprising (SNP) in SNP Square, Bratislava today (23 August 2019). During the act of commemoration, he paid homage to all heroes who lost their lives in the Second World War.
Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “The destinies of the SNP heroes who were not afraid to stand up against the Nazi regime remind us today that many had to make the ultimate sacrifice for the values of peace, freedom and democracy. That is why today we must not forget how fragile these values are and how important it is to protect them.”
The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944. The SNP claimed the lives of 60,000 Slovak soldiers and 12,000 partisans. Banská Bystrica was at the centre of SNP activity. It is there that the nation-wide 75th SNP Anniversary Commemorations with a ceremonial military parade will be held on 29 August.
