TISA Multinational Engineer Battalion to extend its area of responsibility to include Danube

The TISA Multinational Engineer Battalion, whose primary role is to deliver cross-border assistance to local residents in the event of natural disasters along the River Tisa, will extend its area of responsibility to include the River Danube. The draft protocol amending the existing intergovernmental agreement was approved by the Security Council and the Cabinet today (11 September 2019).

The extension of the contractual area of operations by the TISA Multinational Engineer Battalion to include the Danube will increase the practical usability of the existing capacities especially for the territory of Slovakia. In Slovakia, the Danube is an area greatly affected by the threat of floods.

The TISA Multinational Engineer Battalion was established on the basis of an intergovernmental agreement signed by the Governments of Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine on 18 January 2002. The main mission of the Battalion is to provide assistance to local civilian populations and contribute to mitigating the effects of floods along the Tisa. Ex Blonde Avalanche, an annual multinational engineer exercise, is held as part of this cross-border cooperation.
