The Visegrad regional cooperation in the field of security and defence has great potential. Equally important is the partnership with Germany and France, which was successfully launched during the Slovak V4 Presidency. This statement was made by Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš after the V4 Defence Ministers Meeting in Ostrava today (20 September 2019). Among the main topics discussed were priorities of the Czech V4 Presidency agenda, additional areas of V4 cooperation on security and defence, and current EU and NATO initiatives.
On this occasion, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš appreciated the priorities selected by the Czech Republic, as the current V4 Presidency holder, as well as its decision to build on the initiatives of the Slovak V4 Presidency. “Our cooperation, for instance even when it comes to the extended V4+ format along with France and Germany, may thus be further intensely advanced,” he said.
Today, Ministers presented concrete proposals for deepening the cooperation of the Visegrad Four in the field of armaments and acquisitions and discussed the V4’s potential joint operational deployment and the Czech V4 Presidency’s ambition to revise the V4 strategic defence documents. Ministers were also briefed on the current state of play of the V4 EU Battlegroup (V4 EU BG) and the Joint Logistic Support Group Headquarters (JLSG HQ).
During the meeting, Ministers addressed the current initiatives of the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance and the alignment of individual national positions ahead of the October and December meetings at the global forums. They also talked about the options for creating a joint Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) project.
