Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš and Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko participated in the celebrations of Slovak Armed Forces Day today (22 September 2019). Head of the MOD thanked all Service personnel for their work in delivering the security and defence of the Slovak Republic, while reminding that the MOD leaders continue to meet their goals, such as fielding new advanced military assets and improving the Service conditions. In attendance at the celebrations were also Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security Anton Hrnko, members of the Cabinet, and MPs.
In his speech, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Thanks to our efforts, today we can talk about real deliverables as we press ahead with the 2030 Long-Term Defence Development Plan. I believe the concrete results in the form of new advanced assets – be that helicopters or transport aircraft, as well as the decision to purchase F-16 fighter jets and the deliveries of other types of equipment – will bring about greater efficiency in the work our service members perform.” He went on to thank soldiers for their exemplary representation of the Slovak Armed Forces. “Largely thanks to you, the Slovak Armed Forces is a well-respected institution and the highest guarantee in defence of the Slovak Republic – our homeland,” he emphasised.
On the occasion of Slovak Armed Forces Day, Minister Gajdoš attended commemorative ceremonies at the Tomb of M. R. Štefánik on Bradlo Hill and at the Memorial dedicated to the Battle of J. M. Hurban’s Volunteers at Prietržská cesta near Brezová pod Bradlom. Service personnel also marked Slovak Armed Forces Day during a solemn ceremony in M. R. Štefánik Square, Brezová pod Bradlom.
Celebrations of Slovak Armed Forces Day began with a formation flypast of MiG 29s. Visitors to Brezová pod Bradlom were treated to armed forces’ static and dynamic displays, including the role demonstrations of UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter aircrews, military working dog (MWD) handlers from the SVK Military Police (MP), CBRN troops, and members of the NATO EOD COE Trenčín.
Slovakia marks Slovak Armed Forces Day on 22 September, the date which commemorates the first battle won by Slovak volunteers on 22 September 1848 near Brezová pod Bradlom as part of the 1848-49 Slovak Uprising. Over 300 SVK personnel supported this year’s celebrations in and around Brezová pod Bradlom.
