SVK and CZE engineers exercise along with M. R. Štefánik Armed Forces Academy cadets

Bringing together small engineer units of the SVK and CZE Armed Forces, Ex CETEX 2019 was hosted across the training facilities of the Training Centre Lešť from 29 Sept to 4 Oct 2019. The exercise was also attended by fourth-year cadets, of the Armed Forces Academy Liptovský Mikuláš, specialising in engineer trades.

Explaining the goals and benefits of Ex CETEX 2019, the Officer Conducting the Exercise (OCE) and Deputy Commander of the 5th EOD Breaching Operations Company from the Sereď-based Engineer Battalion, 1Lt Matej Ambroz said: “Every year we exercise together alternately in Slovakia and Czechia. The joint training exercises are attended by members of our Engineer Battalion Sereď and the Engineer Battalions Olomouc and Bechyně. This activity is mainly about small engineer units undertaking specialist tasks as part of a specific engineer support mission. For example, searching people, buildings and vehicles. That is exactly where components of an improvised explosive device (IED) or an entire IED may be found. Another tasking is performing forced entry into buildings with the use of explosives. For engineers of both militaries, the exercise facilitates mutually beneficial cooperation and a useful exchange of experience we have gained at home and abroad on different international crisis management operations.”

Sgt 1st Class Oto Svoboda, of the Engineer Battalion Bechyně, for whom this is not his first joint SVK-CZE training exercise, praises the cooperation with SVK engineers. Sgt 1st Class Svoboda said: “This is a great opportunity to familiarise ourselves with the latest practical experience and expertise. This is how engineers of both countries enrich themselves.”

SVK and CZE engineers exercised at different training ranges of the Training Centre Lešť. Among others, they practised wood and steel blasting operations as well as fighting in built-up areas (FIBUA). They were joined by Armed Forces Academy Liptovský Mikuláš cadets in performing the given tasks.

Cpt Jaroslav Kompan, military educator and instructor for engineer trades, who accompanied the cadet cadre at Lešť, was delighted with the opportunity of involving the cadets in Ex CETEX 2019. “They were embedded with SVK and CZE engineer teams. Later on, they themselves tried leading the teams under the supervision of experienced professionals. For cadets, it was a welcome opportunity to develop their practical skills in engineer specialities and in exercising command and control of teams,” said Cpt Jaroslav Kompan in a complimentary way.
