Minister Gajdoš commemorates 75th anniversary of 1944 Partisan Parade in Detva

Today (5 October 2019), SVK Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš visited Detva to attend the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the 1944 Partisan Parade, the only military parade to have been held in Slovakia’s insurgent territory during the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) in WW2. At the opening ceremony, Minister Gajdoš delivered a speech in which he underlined the significance of this event in the SNP and warned against growing intolerance and extremism in society today.

SVK Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “The military parade of 1 October 1944 in Detva has been looked upon as extraordinary and unique to date and ranks among the most important events of the Slovak National Uprising.” He expressed his conviction that every good citizen should be a proud patriot who uses the knowledge of his nation’s history and learns from its mistakes, yet lets himself be inspired by the courage and bravery of our ancestors.

The core of the marching columns during the 1944 Partisan Parade was composed of troops from the 1st Milan Rastislav Štefánik Czechoslovak Partisan Brigade, insurgent units, and French partisans. Residents of Detva actively participated in the anti-Nazi resistance operations, though no battles were waged in the town itself.
