Ex Slovak Shield 2019 enters its final phase

Ex Slovak Shield 2019, a two-level Command Post Exercise (CPX) with partial deployment of troops to training areas and supported by simulation technologies, which is this year’s most significant and final phase of a series of training activities in the Slovak Armed Forces, is entering its final phase at the Training Centre Lešť and on Nitra Garrison’s training ground at Kolíňanský vrch. The exercise runs from 4 to 12 November 2019.

The theme of the exercise is: A mechanised brigade on a joint small-scale operation in a multinational environment in defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Slovak Republic in the context of collective defence against an equivalent enemy. Apart from Slovak service members, a Portuguese Infantry Company, a Polish Motorised Platoon, and a Hungarian Motorised Platoon, embedded in the Martin-Based Mechanised Battalion, are taking part in the exercise as well. Also represented on the exercise are the Indiana National Guard and the Czech Armed Forces.

Martin-based Battalion members along with Portuguese, Hungarian and Polish troops were faced with sudden surprise and abrupt attacks by the enemy, i.e. soldiers of the Mechanised Company, Levice-based Mechanised Battalion, advancing on upgraded combat vehicles close to the Kobola Observation Post (OP) and Jasenový vrch, as well as encountering changing weather conditions. Heavy rain and fog made the combat activity of sleep-deprived troops more challenging. The dug-out defences were literally flooded with water flowing down the slope. Despite this, the companies, led by Cpt Jozef Hraško and Cpt Ján Sedliak, accomplished their mission. This stage of the exercise culminated with Martin-based Battalion members and international troops conducting live firing.

Ex Air Shield 2019, another Command Post Exercise (CPX) with partial deployment of troops to training areas, is being held concurrently from 4 to 8 November 2019 in Slovakia. It is primarily designed to test the C2 system to conduct air operations and demonstrate other capabilities of the Slovak Air Force. It is also aimed at achieving greater coordination of Slovak Air Force and Army units. One of its main tasks is to support Ex Slovak Shield 2019. The exercise brings together elements of the Slovak Air Force HQ Zvolen (SVK AF HQ ZN), all units subordinate to SVK AF HQ ZN, and SVK Army units. The exercise involves nearly 1,000 SVK AF personnel and features L-39, MiG-29, L-410 and C-27J military aircraft, Mi-17 and UH-60M helicopters, and 2K12 KUB surface to air missile systems and IGLA man-portable air defence systems (MANPAD). The aircraft are operating out of Sliač Air Base. Members of the Nitra-based Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade, armed with IGLA MANPADs and led by Sgt 1st Class Roman Rzesniowiecky, are being employed in an air defence role at Sliač Air Base. Other members of the Brigade are operating the 2K12 KUB systems at Kolíňanský vrch in a designated area of SVK airspace.
