A large number of war cemeteries sprang up throughout today’s Slovakia over the course of the First World War. The cemeteries contain 23, 316 WW1 graves. One of them, the Trenčín-Kubrá War Cemetery where 771 soldiers of 9 nationalities (338 Czechs and Slovaks, 24 Italians, 112 Hungarians, 11 Austrians, 54 Poles, 122 Romanians, 4 Germans, 86 Russians, 17 Turkish, and 3 unknown) rest in peace, is unique in its own way. Firstly, the cemetery, which covers an area of 5,000 square metres, has been declared a National Heritage Site (NHS) this year. Secondly, it is located in the grounds of a munitions depot.
According to conservationists, the formal declaration as a NHS was made on the basis that the cemetery carries great historical and societal significance and serves as an important point of remembrance for us to reflect on the tragedy of WW1 victims.
Reconstruction works to the cemetery were carried out in three stages and were completed a year ago to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the WW1 Armistice. Most of the credit for the reconstruction of the cemetery lies with the Slovak Generals Club, especially Lt Gen (Rtd) Pavel Honzek. Their efforts were also aided by the Institute of Military History.
A SVK MOD delegation, led by Brig Gen Slavomír Staviarsky, attended a ceremony marking the 101st anniversary of the WW1 Armistice at the Trenčín-Kubrá War Cemetery on 11 November 2019. In his speech, Brig Gen Slavomír Staviarsky praised the commitment of Lt Gen (Rtd) Pavel Honzek to this cause.
