Another 4 contemporary veterans inducted into MOD Hall of Fame by Minister Gajdoš

Another four contemporary veterans were today inducted into the Ministry of Defence Hall of Fame by Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš during a Veterans Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held at the Radošina Theatre in Bratislava. During this traditional pre-Christmas meeting, Cpl Milan Tomlák, Lt Col Štefan Rigas, MSgt Marián Valach and a member of the 5th Special Forces Regiment Žilina were thus recognised for their meritorious service on missions and operations abroad.

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “This day belongs to the contemporary veterans – professional soldiers who have already performed or are performing their duties far away from their closest ones on missions and operations abroad. Through their responsible approach and commitment, they have contributed to a more secure and stable environment in the world and hence in our homeland.” Minister Gajdoš further added that men and women of the Armed Forces represent the Slovak Armed Forces abroad and are held in high esteem by our foreign partners.

General Secretary of the SVK Ministry of Defence Ján Hoľko said: “We have a lot to be proud of, because our servicemen and women get credit not only at home but also abroad. In turn, we at the Ministry of Defence are keen to provide the best possible Service conditions for them.”

Introducing the four exceptional stories of the awardees that connect everything the Armed Forces should have and do, Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko said: “There is an example of decisiveness which saves lives, there is the story of a soldier who, despite performing his service duties, remains a human being and helps people around him, or the story of a commander who shoulders the burden of responsibility for everything that occurs in the area of operations. And the last soldier to be recognised here today risked his own life to save other people’s lives.

On this occasion, Minister Gajdoš also presented the 75th SNP Anniversary and End of WW2 Medal to WW2 veteran Samuel Baran, who will celebrate his 95th birthday tomorrow. “Today’s event is all the more exceptional, because today I have awarded a WW2 veteran. Thus, we have paid homage to veterans of different generations,” he added.

A total of 474 members of the Slovak Armed Forces are currently deployed abroad. Over 19,200 have rotated in and out of international crisis management missions and operations to date. As of today, the MOD records 8,131 war veterans, of whom 8,024 are contemporary veterans and 107 are WW2 veterans.

At the event, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš also invited nominations for the 23rd Military Deed of the Year Award 2019, which recognises exceptional acts of service to the community and the Armed Forces by service personnel as well as by supporters of Slovakia’s Armed Forces in the following categories: Rescue of Life, Assistance to the Public, and Armed Forces Friend.
