Individual elements of the Mechanised Battalion Martin have fired small arms and thrown hand grenades on Martin Garrison’s Sučany Training Ground in this last week of November. Battalion Commander Lt Col Rudolf Ďurník reminds that all Battalion units and staff members are gradually undertaking firing practice at the turn of November and December.
Battalion Commander Lt Col Rudolf Ďurník said: “We pay special attention to firing weapons and throwing hand grenades, so that our service members develop operationally relevant skills, while complying with all safety regulations. Over the course of the recent exercise Slovak Shield 2019 and our battalion-level exercise, the units deployed carried out live-firing of small arms. All units of the Battalion are now gradually undergoing shooting training on Sučany Training Ground, with the focus on firing standard-issued pistols.”
Commander of the Combat Support Company Cpt Peter Lukáč oversaw the RG-4 offensive hand grenade. When the grenade detonates, it sends a large number of fragments flying with a kill radius of 5m to 10m and a shrapnel-producing radius of 200m. According to him, it is a specific assignment where newcomers, who make up approx. 1/5 of the company, must overcome the fear factor. “They are well prepared in terms of theory, yet everyone feels some respect when they throw their first hand grenade. We all have been through that. Even for this reason, I am pleased no major problems occurred during the execution of this task and all soldiers completed it successfully,” said the Company Commander. He admitted when he himself threw his first grenade as a cadet at the Armed Forces Academy, he paradoxically did not have such a sense of responsibility he now had when he was overseeing the training.
MSgt Peter Šipoš was in charge of the pistol firing session. He is satisfied with the results the soldiers achieved during the session. Most of them met or surpassed the 90 point requirement. According to him, it is felt that more experienced soldiers recorded better results, partly because some of them enjoy shooting in their free time as well.
