Defence Minister J. Naď continues his tour of military installations: Problems of our soldiers cannot be identified out of office in Bratislava

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď is continuing his tour of military installations to speak directly with the men and women of the SVK Armed Forces. Today, Deputy Parliamentary Chairman Milan Laurenčík, State Secretary of the SVK Ministry of Defence Marian Majer and Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko joined him in visiting military units in Žilina and Martin.

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: "If we want to keep the armed forces functional and high quality, we must know their problems, so to say, inside out. Simply put, the problems of our soldiers cannot be identified out of office in Bratislava. That is why my goal is to visit, in person, all our units."

Last week, the Minister paid a visit to the Slovak Special Operations Forces Command (SOCOM) in Trenčín, which exercises command over the 5th Special Forces Regiment Žilina. Speaking after visiting the special forces, the head of the MOD said: "The SOF members attest to their strategic importance for the Armed Forces as part of domestic crisis management and their deployments on international missions and operations." He went on to acknowledge the Regiment's highly respected and years-long operational record in Afghanistan.

While still at SOCOM, he was interested to hear more about the current status of tasks — among those are reconnaissance missions, observations, raid actions, anti-terrorist operations, and the fight against chemical, biological and radiological weapons, and assistance tasks in support of the Ministry of Interior.

His away day today was a chance to see the Training and Mobilisation Manning Base in Martin, the Minister said: "This is an indispensable element of our Armed Forces which delivers specialist training and education for service personnel. That is why I was interested to find out how the quality of training can be improved."

In terms of numbers, 782 soldier trainees, including cadets of the General M. R. Štefánik Armed Forces Academy Liptovský Mikuláš, underwent Basic Military Training in Martin last year. Annually, the Base delivers specialist courses and training for up to 5,000 soldiers, including pre-deployment training for those to be deployed on missions and operations abroad or posted to NATO structures.

Finally, the official programme in Martin saw the Minister visiting the Supply Base II, 11th Mechanised Battalion – Cpt Ján Francisci Immediate Reaction Battalion, and Repair Battalion. "All meetings and conversations with our service members are of great importance to me," he concluded.
