J. Naď: By strengthening V4 regional cooperation, we can contribute together towards more effective solutions to challenges at pan-European level

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď today held talks with the Hungarian Ambassador to Slovakia, HE Mr Tibor Pető, and subsequently with the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Slovakia, HE Mr Krzysztof Strzałka, who both came to introduce themselves in their capacity as Ambassadors. A large focus of the initial meetings was on current themes of bilateral defence and military cooperation. To the Ambassadors, the head of the MOD presented the SVK Government's priorities and goals in the field of defence and he was interested in possible ways to advance cooperation on domestic defence industry.

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The geopolitical area of Slovakia and its Euro-Atlantic orientation provide an excellent opportunity for developing and reinforcing mutual relations with our partners and neighbours even in the politico-military area, be that at the bilateral level or as part of the Visegrad Group.” On this occasion, he praised the excellent level of the relations between Hungary and the Republic of Poland. “By strengthening the V4′s regional cooperation, we can contribute together to more effective solutions to challenges at the pan-European level,” he added.

The Minister and the Ambassadors addressed NATO and EU commitments. In this context, he underscored Slovakia's commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defence by 2024 as well as the fact that the acting MOD leadership will seek solutions to fulfil this pledge given that the pandemic will have an impact on public spending and hence on the defence budget. Additionally, they paid attention to the MOD's priorities and goals. In this respect, Minister Naď emphasised the necessity to update the SVK Security Strategy and the SVK Defence Strategy, which is among the main priorities of the MOD leadership.

On education and training, Minister Naď praised the cooperation between the SVK and HUN Armed Forces and that between the SVK and POL Armed Forces in the field of military education, training and international exercises, including the cooperation with the Polish Special Operations Forces Command, which has in the long term been at a high level. During the meeting, they also spoke about the options for cross-border cooperation and the deployment of forces on NATO and EU missions.
