The Ministry of Defence will construct a new Operations Centre at the Air Operations Control Brigade Zvolen, where service members will ensure the control and protection of SVK airspace on a 24/7 basis. Partial funding of €1.4 million for the Operations Centre was secured from the NATO Security Investment Programme (NSIP).
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Under the [NSIP] programme, the Slovak project obtained the biggest funding from among all countries. Thanks to the resources, we will be able to save our taxpayers′ money and provide our soldiers with the new, modern infrastructure needed to meet today′s demanding technical and security criteria. The building will be part of a larger project, one which is introducing a new NATO Air Command and Control System for NATO air forces.”
Slovakia's success under the NSIP is appreciated by Slovak Ambassador and Permanent Representative to NATO Radovan Javorčík. Minister Naď thanked all MOD employees who participated in drafting the project: “Thanks to their work, high quality processing and defence of the project, which has combined all our needs with NATO requirements, considerable funding from parts of the state budget allocated to the Ministry of Defence has been saved. The money can be reinvested in other areas which urgently need investment.”
A new extension to the SVK Air Force Headquarters Building in Zvolen will be constructed to accommodate the Operations Centre, technical and support rooms. An international tender for a construction works contractor is underway, with estimated project costs of €2.6 million, excluding VAT. Construction works are expected to be completed by the autumn of 2021.
