Today, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď and Chief of Defence Daniel Zmeko welcomed soldiers returning from EU, NATO and UN missions and operations during a homecoming ceremony at the Training and Mobilisation Manning Base Martin. They also participated in the Change of Command (COC) ceremony for the Commander of the Non-commissioned Officer (NCO) Academy. It will be led by Sergeant Major Ján Čmelík with effect from today. His most recent appointment was Deputy Commander of the NCO Academy.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Today in Martin, we have welcomed 73 members of the SVK Armed Forces who served on missions and operations abroad where they participated in solving tasks, working towards the security of us all. I am very pleased that after their responsible deployment, which is highly appreciated by our partners, they have returned to their families.” The Minister thanked the service members for bringing credit on the SVK Armed Forces abroad. He also reminded that 457 SVK servicemen and women are currently deployed abroad. A total of 19,500 soldiers have rotated in and out of international crisis management missions and operations to date.
“It is important for all institutions the aim of which is to prepare and train members of the SVK Armed Forces to perform to the highest quality and efficiency standards. That is why I believe the new commander will fully rise to the challenge and make a contribution to developing the NCO Academy,” said the head of the MOD and wished the new commander a successful start in his new appointment. “The basis for taking on tasks and challenges our soldiers can come across during their careers is, among others, honest training. I believe that the Academy under the new leadership will continue to deliver education and training activities to the highest standards,” he added.
Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko said: “By establishing the NCO Academy in January 2003, we started the process of building what we consider to be the backbone of the Armed Forces – the NCO Corps. Because NCOs belong to service members who are leaders in every respect – they are well trained and well respected by all members of the Slovak Armed Forces. It can be said that they exert direct influence on approx. 80 per cent of soldiers in the entire Armed Forces.”
The NCO Academy is an education and training institution of the SVK Armed Forces, which, based on the requirements of the SVK Armed Forces, delivers specific training for NCOs at individual levels of command and prepares and improves training documents for the needs of the Armed Forces.
Currently, members of the SVK Armed Forces are executing tasks with RESOLUTE SUPPORT in Afghanistan, EUFOR Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina, UNFICYP in Cyprus, NMI in Iraq, enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) in Latvia, UNTSO in the Golan Heights, and the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia.
