Defence State Secretary Marian Majer meets Finnish Ambassador J. Pesola

State Secretary of the SVK Ministry of Defence Marian Majer met with Ambassador of the Republic of Finland Jukka Pesola. Today′s conversation was dominated not only by the bilateral defence cooperation between Slovakia and Finland, but also by the SVK Government′s foreign policy and security goals and priorities, the modernisation programmes in the SVK Armed Forces, and the strengthening of multilateral cooperation at EU and NATO levels. Ambassador Pesola was provided an update on State Secretary Majer′s visit to Finland next week.

State Secretary of the SVK Ministry of Defence Marian Majer said: “On current foreign policy issues as well as those concerning the EU, both countries often share the same positions and present many issues in a coordinated manner. These starting positions provide excellent ground for a further deepening of our relations in the politico-military field.” He appreciated that a debate on the reform and strengthening of defence capacities has been underway in Finland, which is closely connected to defence modernisation. “I believe that we have a lot to offer to Finland in the field of Armed Forces modernisation largely thanks to the cutting edge products of our domestic defence industry,” he added.

At the meeting with the Finnish Ambassador, State Secretary Majer presented the MOD′s new goals and priorities. He updated the Ambassador on the drafting of new strategic security and defence documents, the preparation of the Action Plan for Fight against Hybrid Threats, and the delivery of the Slovak Republic′s commitments that arise out of its membership in the EU and NATO in the field of defence and security.

Also discussed were the EU′s common initiatives, including Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), and challenges in the fight against hybrid threats. In this context, State Secretary Majer underlined Slovakia′s membership in the Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats in Helsinki and expressed the need for closer engagement in this field.
