The Ministry of Defence has joined the City Bees project. Working in partnership with the Resin Environmental Protection Centre, the project’s author, beehives for two bee families have been placed within the grounds of the MOD in Bratislava. Along with the Ecological Mobility project which is now complete, this marks another step of the MOD leaders as they work towards a greener ministry.
Seeing first-hand the beehives, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď emphasised: “Bees are hugely important for us. If there were no bees, approx. 20,000 plant species would have difficulty reproducing and existing at all. If so, the natural conditions could be changed to such a degree that people might not be able to survive. If we want our society to go greener, we have to start from ourselves and we want to lead by example.” He thanked the Resin Civic Association for its cooperation and informed that, to support these city bees, there are plans to plant different honey plant species close to the beehives set up in the grounds of the MOD.
According to Petra Ježeková, of the Resin Civic Association, beekeepers from the Association will look after the beehives and bee colony. “I highly appreciate the initiative of the MOD which has come up with the idea of supporting the environment in this way. And if you think that bees feel well in the countryside only, this is not quite so. There are a lot of green wedges and flowers blooming from spring to autumn in the cities. That’s why I am sure that bees will also do well in the grounds of the Ministry of Defence.”
