Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Slovak-Hungarian Mixed Commission on Military Cooperation, comprised of SVK and HUN MOD representatives, held a long-distance meeting over a video link today. On behalf of the SVK MOD, Defence State Secretary Marian Majer discussed current issues on the agenda of SVK-HUN defence cooperation.
Defence State Secretary Marian Majer said: “This stable format for sharing information and experience and exploring possible common areas of cooperation in the field of security and defence with our neighbour and partner has proved its value over the past years. Today we’ve spoken about Topic No. 1 in both countries – the fight against COVID-19.” Mr Majer updated his Hungarian colleague István Szabó on Op Shared Responsibility. On the SVK-HUN military aviation cooperation agreement, Mr Majer said: “The Agreement between the Government of the Slovak Republic and the Government of Hungary on Cooperation in the Field of Military Aviation was approved by the SVK Government at its session of 11 November 2020.”
During the video conference, Mr Majer took stock of NATO, EU and V4 collaborative efforts and assessed the potential of a SVK contribution to NATO’s Headquarters Multinational Division Centre (HQ MND-C) in an effort to deepen international cooperation. Also discussed were the plans and priorities for military deployments on missions and operations abroad.
Both sides used the discussion to exchange experience on personnel-related issues – recruitment, military education, training and courses and recreation, as well as looking at modernisation programmes and future security priorities.
The Slovak-Hungarian Mixed Commission for Military Cooperation is one of the 12 (originally 11) SVK-HUN Commissions, which emerged out of the Agreement on Good Neighbourhood and Friendly Cooperation between the Slovak Republic and Hungary of 1995. The Commission has convened annually and alternately in Slovakia and Hungary since 1999.
