There are 240 SVK military personnel (of which 23 are servicewomen) currently supporting UNFICYP in Cyprus. Today, the SVK UNFICYP contingent was visited by Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď and Foreign and European Affairs Minister Ivan Korčok. The two leaders met with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) in Cyprus and Head of UNFICYP Elizabeth Spehar and UNFICYP Force Commander Maj Gen Cheryl Pearce, who both appreciated the dedication and work achievements of SVK armed forces in Cyprus.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “UNFICYP is one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions, which has been running continuously since 1964. Almost two decades have passed since our soldiers first deployed on this mission. Over this period, they've become respected and recognised members of international teams and they’ve accomplished a massive amount of tasks and goals. I thank them for representing Slovakia in an exemplary way.”
On UNFICYP, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď emphasised that the SVK Armed Forces have full responsibility for Sector 4 of UNFICYP. On international crisis management, he said a total of 468 SVK troops are currently stationed abroad and a total of 19,500 SVK military personnel have rotated in and out of missions and operations since the first SVK deployment abroad.
The head of the MOD was thankful to all servicemen and women for serving in support of peace and security wherever needed. “I want to thank all SVK soldiers whose dedication, experience and perseverance bring results and are appreciated by our foreign partners,” he added.
SLOVCON peacekeepers perform assigned duties in Sector 4 as their operational area of responsibility, as well as carrying out tasks in support of HQ UNFICYP under the valid mandate, thereby playing a part in preventing the resumption of conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots; ensuring compliance with the ceasefire between the belligerent parties; and restoring and maintaining the rule of law and order on the island.
As part of his official visit to the Republic of Cyprus, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď will hold talks with Cypriot Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides. In the afternoon, Mr Naď and Mr Korčok are scheduled to depart for an official visit to the United Arab Emirates, where they will meet with their counterparts and top state officials.
