Sportsmen and women of DUKLA Military Sports Centre achieve personal records and maximum performances at P-T-S Athletics Meeting

Sportsmen and women of the DUKLA Military Sports Centre achieved several successes at the P-T-S Athletics Meeting in Šamorín on Wednesday 2 June 2021. Race walker Dominik Černý brought out the best world performance of the year in the 3,000m race walk and placed 1st.

Dominik Černý said: “It is an excellent step forward, but quick as lightning I would definitely exchange it for the Olympics qualification.” Dominik is not going to participate in this year's Olympic Games (OG) in Tokyo due to his injury, because of which he did not start training until this February.

At the athletics event in Šamorín, two-time European hammer throw vice-champion Martina Hrašnová recorded her best performance of the season by throwing 70.38m. Overall, she placed 3rd and is still in with a chance of earning qualification for the OG. Among others still standing a chance of representing Slovakia in Japan is hammer thrower Marcel Lomnický, of the DUKLA Military Sports Centre, who has improved his personal record twice this year. In his sixth attempt, he threw 75.19m and placed 4th.

Director of the DUKLA Military Sports Centre Roman Benčík said: “A number of our sportsmen and women have achieved either their personal record or this year's maximum performance. I am very happy with our young athletes and I am satisfied with the DUKLA representation at the event in Šamorín.” He confirmed that eight sportspeople will fly to Japan, while another two dozen may still seize the chance of qualifying for the Olympics. “Among the Olympic qualifiers are race walkers Matej Tóth and Michal Morvay. Realistically, at least another eight athletes are shoe-in for qualification, and I believe they will make it,” he said.

The successes of the DUKLA Military Sports Centre Banská Bystrica are appreciated by Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď, he said: “We at the MOD are aware that DUKLA brings together top athletes who need and deserve support and high quality conditions for training – and that's exactly what we are trying to provide as best as we can.“ He added that he keeps his fingers crossed for all DUKLA sportspeople preparing for the Olympics and the coming top level sporting challenges.
