MOD experts are part of strategic discussions on security at GLOBSEC 2021

This year, too, the Ministry of Defence is a vital part of the working groups and discussion sessions at one of the leading security conferences in Europe – GLOBSEC Bratislava Forum, as the 16th edition of the Forum takes place on 15-17 June 2021 in Bratislava. The Ministry of Defence is represented at the conference by MOD leaders and subject matter specialists on different aspects of State defence and security.

Thanks to the high quality input into the conference by MOD experts, the MOD is one of the crucial shapers of strategic security discussions in the Euro-Atlantic area, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď underlined in his statement, adding that he himself will appear on a panel dedicated to the NATO 2030 agenda – “NATO 2030: How to get there?” on Thursday (17 June 2021).

On NATO 2030, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “This is a highly important issue and, indeed, a very topical one after yesterday's NATO Summit of Allied leaders. I will discuss it with Defence Minister of North Macedonia Radmila Šekerinska and Minister of National Defence of Canada Harjit Sajjan, who will join us via a video link.” In the margins of the conference, Mr Naď will have a number of bilateral engagements during the conference.

Among the key MOD speakers at GLOBSEC 2021 is Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer. Today, he was joined by his Czech and Swedish counterparts Jan Havránek and Jan-Olof Lind in having a full discussion on “European Defence Cooperation: Defining the Resilient Europe”.

Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “The present period presents a unique opportunity for strengthening the strategic partnership between the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance, since both groupings are engaged in the process of reflection.” On European defence cooperation, he gave his assessment of the Strategic Compass and looked at the challenges and opportunities of the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy.

While in a different format, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer also discussed the latest defence themes such as the impact of new technologies and modernisation on the defence and security of countries, critical infrastructure protection, and the focal role of transatlantic cooperation in this field.

Another MOD speaker at GLOBSEC 2021 is Director General of the MOD's Defence Policy Department Martin Sklenár. On Wednesday, Mr Sklenár will participate in a discussion session on arms control and disarmament, named “Current State of Arms Control”. In his opinion, this discussion will contribute towards efforts to identify the impact of this theme on European security and to take the current political and security situation in the world forward.

One of the highly debated topics at GLOBSEC is that of hybrid threats. On Wednesday 16 June, Advisor to the SVK Defence Minister on Hybrid Threats Victor Breiner will present Slovakia's response to the challenges of hybrid activity in our country.
