While attending the GLOBSEC Bratislava Forum today (17 June 2021), Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď spoke on the panel “NATO 2030: How to get there?” – which was the central theme of last week's NATO Summit of Allied leaders in Brussels. He was joined on the panel by Defence Minister of North Macedonia Radmila Šekerinska in person and by Minister of National Defence of Canada Harjit Sajjan virtually over a video call.
Speaking on the “NATO 2030” panel, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The most recent NATO Summit of Allied leaders reaffirmed the Alliance‘s unity and determination. This increasingly unpredictable security environment presents challenges which we cannot face individually. And that‘s the task for all of us together – to strengthen collective resilience and the readiness to defend the security of our populations collectively.” Towards this end, the participants of the Brussels Summit have taken on a number of new commitments on resilience, cyber defence and climate change, Mr Naď added.
The head of the MOD once again placed a heavy emphasis on the Alliance's collective defence as the main pillar of Slovakia's security and defence. “Naturally, from this follows our support for strengthening the deterrence and defence arrangements of NATO which is capable of responding adaptively to threats emanating concurrently from every strategic direction and operational domain,” before adding that “to achieve this goal, it will be important for individual countries to work towards this effort by delivering policies and strategies, both at national and collective levels”.
Slovakia is ready to continually follow through with its NATO obligations. This is especially true of SVK military deployments on international crisis management missions and operations. According to Minister Naď, five members of the SVK Armed Forces are currently deployed with the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), and, once the Parliament has approved their mandate, they will stay in Iraq until 2022.
Ahead of the panel discussion, Minister Naď held a bilateral meeting with Defence Minister of North Macedonia Radmila Šekerinska. The two leaders discussed future lines of collaboration to enhance the SVK-MKD relationship in the political and military field, covering topics such as support for the defence industry sectors, military education and training. On operations, he praised the deployment of both armed forces on Op EUFOR ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
