Ministry of Defence holds remembrance ceremony to mark Gen M. R. Štefánik's 141st birthday

To mark the 141st anniversary of Gen M. R. Štefánik's birthday today, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer attended a remembrance ceremony in tribute to Gen Štefánik at the 2nd Czechoslovak Parachute Brigade Memorial in Krpáčovo.

Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “Whoever believes that others will fight for his freedom and win peace is not worthy of it” – these words by General Milan Rastislav Štefánik resonate with us even today. We must never forget his persistent message of struggle for freedom and democracy. We owe this to our veterans and all those who lost their lives in the fight for our better future. This is the most important legacy for our future generations.“

During the ceremony, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer presented commemorative medals to five WW2 veterans and a member of the Slovak Anti-Nazi Fighters Association.

On Saturday 26 June 2021, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď and Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer will pay tribute to the memory of Gen Štefánik by participating in the 3rd Veteran Ascent of Mt Ďumbier. On their way to the peak, they will also stop by the M. R. Štefánik Chalet and the Gen M. R. Štefánik Memorial.
