The winners of the 20th MOD Drawing and Painting Contest, dubbed Soldiers Through the Eyes of Children, took over cash prizes and gifts during a prize-giving ceremony at the Ministry of Defence today (29 June 2021). Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer thanked them for their interest in the Slovak Armed Forces, service personnel, and SVK security and defence.
Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “It is a real pleasure that military topics are not foreign to our young generation as evidenced by the record number of entries we received. Our thanks go out to all of the over 4,000 pupils for their participation in the contest and, of course, to their parents and teachers for their role in increasing this generation's awareness of security and defence. I congratulate all winners and I am happy to have met and thanked them in person.”
All the winners of the Junior Pupils category – Samuel Molnár of Kolárovo (1st place: “We honour soldiers“), Rebeka Jamborová of Beckov (2nd place: “Soldiers in training“), and Bianka Bokrošová of Komárno (3rd place: “A Slovak soldier“) picked up their cash prizes and gifts today. In the Senior Pupils category, Barbara Vargová of Komárno (1st place: “Combating Covid-19“) and Viktória Havrilčáková of Trebišov (3rd place: “Assistance and support“) attended the prize-giving ceremony in person, while Sarah Vivien Dzurovčáková of Trebišov (2nd place: “Defence, courage, humanity and honour“) was not able to attend.
A total of 4,043 drawings and paintings entered the contest in the Junior and Senior Pupil categories. Overall, 367 schools, of which 33 were special needs schools, took part in the contest as groups. 76 drawings were sent by 67 individuals. Thematically, the contestants portrayed service members in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, military personnel helping citizens as part of domestic crisis management activities, and soldiers in training, on deployments abroad, and as friends of children in a most sincere manner.
The MOD has put 40 drawings and paintings on display at the Shopping Centre in Bratislava's Vajnorská Street. “It would be a pity to leave these drawings and paintings only for the eyes of the judges. That is why we have decided to show the works of clever pupils in the public. Although prizes are limited, we believe that a lot more contestants deserve recognition for their dedicated efforts,” concluded Mr Majer.
