Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer attended the 1st Defence Exhibition Athens (DEFEA) 2021 today (12 July 2021). As part of his official programme in Athens, he also held bilateral talks with Hellenic Deputy Minister of National Defence Alkiviadis Stefanis and Cypriot Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Andreas P. Louka.
Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “As a priority, one area of common interest was the issue of fostering bilateral defence and security cooperation. Then, the defence equipment fair gave me the opportunity to present products by Slovak defence manufacturers, including the ZUZANA 2 Self-Propelled Gun Howitzer produced by state-owned company Konštrukta Defence.” Manufacturers from 21 countries exhibited their full line of products and services at DEFEA 2021 this year.
The meeting between Mr Majer and Mr Stefanis provided the space for a discussion, among others, of the ongoing modernisation programmes, recent developments at the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence Centre of Excellence (NATO IAMD), and the posting of a member of the Hellenic Armed Forces to the NATO Force Integration Unit Slovakia (NFIU SVK).
At the talks with his Cypriot counterpart, Mr Majer and Mr Louka discussed areas of defence and security cooperation, with the participation of both Defence Attachés (DAs). Mr Majer thanked for the accreditation of the new Slovak DA to the Republic of Cyprus, Col Martin Sovič. Work on drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the countries is underway to take cooperation to a higher level.
That same day during his visit to DEFEA 2021 in Athens, Deputy Defence Minister Majer also met with the Hellenic Minister of National Defence and the Hellenic Chief of Defence, the Slovenian Minister of Defence, and the Czech Chief of Defence.
As part of the working programme yesterday (11 July 2021) at Souda Bay in Crete, the Deputy Defence Minister paid a visit to the Souda Naval Base, which is home to the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre (NMIOTC), as well as receiving a tour of the NATO Missile Firing Installation (NAMFI), the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence Centre of Excellence (NATO IAMD), and the 115th Combat Wing.
