Minister Naď meets with Italian Ambassador Catherine Flumiani

Today (14 July 2021), Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď met with the Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Slovakia, Her Excellency Catherine Flumiani, on her first visit to the Ministry of Defence since taking up her Diplomatic Service appointment in Slovakia. They consulted closely on ways to enhance mutual cooperation on defence and security. In this respect, they also spoke about the expected participation of the Italian Air Force in the Slovak International Air Fest (SIAF 2021).
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The Italian Republic is one of our partners and allies, which is why I believe that potential areas of bilateral cooperation in the politico-military field are in our shared interests on which we can build in the future.” Mr Naď praised the ongoing cooperation between the Slovak Air Force and the Italian Air Force on training flying personnel and technicians for C-27J Spartan transport aircraft in service with the SVK Air Force.
Minister Naď updated Ambassador Flumiani on SVK involvement in Mali as part of the EUTM Mali and in the Central African Republic as part of the EUTM RCA, and on the planned deployment of members of the SVK Military Police aboard a German Navy frigate on Op EUNAVFOR MED IRINI in the Mediterranean Sea. Mention was made that the Parliamentary plenum would still need to vote on the SVK deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. In this context, Ambassador Flumiani highlighted the work of two SVK servicemen at the EU Operational HQ (OHQ) in Rome.
At the meeting with the Italian Ambassador, Minister Naď presented the MOD's vision and plans on SVK Armed Forces modernisation, Slovakia's delivery of international commitments, including the expenditure target of 2% of GDP on defence and the stand-up of a Heavy Mechanised Brigade, as well as introducing the Government-approved strategic documents – the SVK Defence Strategy and the SVK Security Strategy.
