152 new officer cadets begin their studies at General M. R. Štefánik Armed Forces Academy

To mark the beginning of their studies, 123 male and 29 female first-year officer cadets of the Bachelor of Science programme took the Academy's Pledge at the General M. R. Štefánika Armed Forces Academy (AOS) Liptovký Mikuláš, in the presence of AOS Commandant Assoc Prof Jozef Puttera CSc. Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer turned up to show his support for the officer cadets.

Deputy Defence Minister Majer said: “For the new cadets, today marks the beginning of a challenging, yet crucial preparation for the future. I wish them every success with their studies and a strong motivation to contribute to the security and defence of the Slovak Republic and its citizens, while working even over and above their normal duties. The Academy and its cadets can count on full support from the Ministry of Defence.“ For the MOD, the Armed Forces Academy represents an important educational establishment and acts as a guarantee of quality in educating future SVK Armed Forces personnel, Mr Majer underlined.

At the ceremony, Deputy Defence Minister Majer gave thanks to the Academic Staff for their dedicated work and presented the SVK Minister of Defence Memorial Medal to AOS Commandant Assoc Prof Jozef Puttera CSc and former Vice-Dean for Science Prof Marcel Harakaľ PhD for making their extraordinary contribution to developing military education and sciences.

Each cadet shook hands with the AOS Commandant, pledging to honour his and her study and service duties and to respect the Academy's Code of Conduct. In his remarks, Assoc Prof Jozef Puttera CSc said: “So welcome to the Academy and start preparing for the mission of your life. I wish you every success with your studies and personal life, and the best of health.”

On entering the Academy, cadets are treated as Military Personnel in Preparatory State Service. As well as being entitled to Service pay, they are subject to the Social Care Act and enjoy the benefits that follow on from it. In the 2021/2022 academic year, the cadets have taken up studies in the following Academic Programmes (Majors): Security and Defence of the State; Electronic Weapons Systems; Military Signals and Information Systems; Weapons Systems, Weapons and their Components.

In addition to hosting the Academy's Pledge ceremony, the Academy also marked the beginning of the new academic year for another 340 Bachelor's degree and 130 Master's degree cadets.
