SVK Ministry of Defence delegation attends memorial service for French partisans in 1944 Slovak National Uprising

As part of the Defence Minister's official visit to France, the SVK Ministry of Defence delegation attended a memorial service for the French partisans who died in the 1944 Slovak National Uprising (SNP) at St Louis Cathedral in Paris. The event was organised by the SVK Embassy in Paris in close collaboration with the Slovak and French MODs.

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The help of the French fighting side by side with the Slovak partisans for freedom and democracy testifies to the close ties of friendship between our two countries. We honour the memory of the French heroes who fought for our shared values and we pay tribute to their sacrifice. We pledge never to forget them.”

The memorial service at St Louis Cathedral, located at the heart of the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris, was, for the first time, led by the Slovak Chaplain in Chief of Ecumenical Pastoral Service in the Slovak Armed Forces, Col Viktor Sabo. In his homily, he expressed his support for all serving soldiers of both Armed Forces and paid tribute to the memory of the fallen French and Slovak soldiers and victims of the 1944 Slovak National Uprising.

While in Paris, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď also attended remembrance ceremonies at the General Štefánik Memorial in Štefánik Square in Paris's 16th arrondissement and at the General Štefánik Statue at the Meudon Observatory in Meudon, where Štefánik worked as astronomer in 1904.
