There has been marked progress in the Slovak-Ukrainian defence engagement over the recent period, especially at the military professional level, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď announced after his meeting with Ukrainian Chief of Defence Gen Lt Gen Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who is visiting Slovakia at the invitation of Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The Slovak Armed Forces’ recent deployments to Ex Joint Endeavour 2021 and Ex Rapid Trident 2021 in Ukraine and Ukrainian participation in Ex Blonde Avalanche 2021 in Slovakia are testament to the strong partnership and defence engagement with our eastern neighbour. Recently, as a signal of support and cooperation, we also sent our troops to Ukraine to take part, alongside other Allied forces, in the military parade to mark the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.”
According to Minister Naď, the current programme of SVK-UKR defence activities covers official visits of SVK Armed Forces delegations to Ukraine, courses for UKR military personnel at the M. R. Štefánik Armed Forces Academy in Liptovský Mikuláš, assistance in capabilities generation, and training facilities to be made reciprocally available to both Armed Forces.
On SVK Armed Forces modernisation, Mr Naď informed Lt Gen Zaluzhnyi of the ongoing defence procurement programmes and highlighted prospective areas of cooperation between SVK and UKR defence industry companies.
Topics of discussion also included security and defence challenges in the neighbourhood of Ukraine. Defence Minister Naď expressed Slovakia’s full support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and reform process towards Euro-Atlantic standards and structures. Finally, Mr Naď underlined that Slovakia supports the proposal to establish the EU Military Advisory and Training Mission Ukraine in an effort to strengthen Professional Military Education (PME) in Ukraine.
