Deputy Defence Minister Majer attends EXPO 2021 Dubai's Space Week

At the invitation of the Ministry of Education, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer attended the EXPO 2021 Dubai's Space Week. During the event, he met with representatives of space tech companies and research establishments and briefed them on R&D space funding from the EU and NATO.

Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “Space is a rapidly growing area of interest for countries across the globe, even from the perspective of defence and security. The SVK MOD wants to be proactive in this field – this is also because NATO recognised space as a new operational domain in 2019. As a result, we made space and space technologies our priority for the MOD R&D programme until 2025.” In this respect, Mr Majer said the MOD places emphasis on close cooperation and information sharing between academia, industry and government agencies.

The joint trip of the Slovak delegation, comprising the Deputy Defence and Education Ministers along with representatives of the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry, Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO), Slovak Academy of Sciences, and researchers and business people, is a direct testament that the government views space cooperation across the government agencies, academia and the private sector to be of immense importance.

As part of the Space Week, Marian Majer and his counterpart Ľudovít Paulis opened a discussion on space cooperation with an international audience. “Slovakia has a great potential in this area, and we must unlock it to drive synergy between the civilian, defence and space industry forward,” said Mr Majer.

As part of the official programme, the Slovak delegation received a tour of the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) in Dubai.
