The 76th anniversary of the official creation of the United Nations, which was celebrated on United Nations Day yesterday, was today marked by MOD and Armed Forces leaders in a ceremony at the Engineer Battalion Sereď.
Speaking in front of the gathered audience of SVK peacekeepers, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “The UN Charter entered into force on 24 October 1945 and its values of peace, security, democracy, and respect for human rights and international treaties have remained the overarching pillar of relationships for nearly 200 UN Member States to date. As a matter of fact, this is the only global organisation for overseeing and maintaining peace, and Slovakia wants to be part of it.”
In his United Nations Day speech, Mr Majer gave thanks to all SVK serving and ex-service peacekeepers for the contribution Slovakia has made to the multinational operations under the UN flag. “We also owe our respect and gratitude to the 243 members of the Slovak Armed Forces who are currently representing Slovakia, while serving in blue berets with UNFICYP in Cyprus and with UNTSO in the Golan Heights.”
Also present at the medals parade at the Engineer Battalion Sereď were representatives of the UN VETERAN SLOVAKIA (UNVS) Civic Association who decorated the Engineer Battalion Battle Flag with a UNVS ribbon and presented SVK peacekeepers with the Order of the UN VETERAN SLOVAKIA Medals, 1st Grade and 2nd Grade, for meritorious service and building peace.
