Ahead of Veterans Day tomorrow, a remembrance ceremony in tribute to all the heroes who have fought for our nation and the freedom of future generations was held at the WW2 Western Resistance Members Memorial in Bratislava's Šafárik Square. The event was organised by the Ministry of Defence in cooperation with the British Embassy.
Speaking at the Memorial, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer expressed his admiration and respect for all veterans. “For them, timeless values have been greater than fear. They have not been afraid to sacrifice their lives in the fight for a better future - whether that's fighting with a weapon in their hands or contributing otherwise,” said Mr Majer.
On Thursday 11 November 2021, the Ministry of Defence will mark Veterans Day with remembrance ceremonies at the SVK Armed Forces Members Memorial and the Memorial to the Fallen Members of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps at Háj Nicovô cemetery in Liptovský Mikuláš, at the Remembrance Hall of the SNP Memorial in Banská Bystrica, as well as with a rose planting ceremony at the Veterans Bench in Banská Bystrica.
To raise public awareness of Veterans Day, military personnel will hand out red poppies to residents of selected cities in Slovakia. For the second consecutive year, the red poppy will be projected onto Bratislava Castle, starting from 18:00pm.
