IDefence Minister Jaroslav Naď and Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer participated as speakers in ITAPA 2021, Slovakia's leading conference on digitalization and new technologies. At ITAPA, the top Defence leaders presented their visions and solutions on new security challenges. The conference is supported by the Ministry of Defence.
After appearing as a speaker on the conference panel “Slovakia swept by disinformation”, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The Ministry of Defence has, for the first time, become a partner of the event. This is largely because ITAPA covers disinformation, hoaxes, cyber defence and security. We are looking forward to cooperating together in the future. Obviously, there is an enormous interest in these issues, even by the SVK Government.”
Minister Naď announced that a strategic document to take the fight against hybrid threats in Slovakia to a higher level will soon be adopted. “We are delighted at that prospect and we believe this will help us make sure the government and state institutions take a strategic approach towards ensuring the security and defence of the Slovak Republic and its citizens, because it is often the case that the disinformation and hybrid threats we face on a day-to-day basis are directed against the interests of our country and citizens.”
As part of the discussion on disinformation, the need and options for regulating this area of interest by decreasing the income of those who generate disinformation and by limiting microtargeting on the basis of psychological user profiles were addressed. That led Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď, Foreign and European Affairs Minister Ivan Korčok, Interior Minister Roman Mikulec and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Investments, Regional Development and Informatization Veronika Remišová into discussing fake news and hoaxes, cyber attacks and the defence against them, and expressions of hate on the internet. In this context, the leaders underlined the importance of pan-European efforts to contain them.
Also today, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer along with Deputy Foreign and European Affairs Minister Martin Klus, Tomáš Valášek MP and Vladimíra Marcinková MP participated in the conference panel “EU and NATO: How to build a secure Europe?” From the perspective of security and defence, they looked at how the dialogue between the EU and NATO worked. Speaking on the panel, they underlined that EU-NATO cooperation was instrumental to handling the current security challenges, with no other alternative in place. Speaking of EU-NATO cooperation, Mr Majer said: “Slovakia is supportive of reinforcing all of its dimensions, with emphasis on cyber security, hybrid threats and defence cooperation.”
Mr Majer considers European defence capabilities building to be the biggest challenge into the future, because the EU needs to become capable of addressing security challenges in Europe and its neighbourhood independently, while sharing the common defence burden with the US partner. He also pointed to the need for the EU to be actively engaged in absorbing the Chinese influence on European economy and in the technological space.
As an inspirational speaker at ITAPA, Olympian and Director of the DUKLA Military Sports Centre Banská Bystrica Col Matej Tóth spoke on the subject of “How to become the best in the world”.
