Military Deed of the Year Awards celebrate outstanding acts of assistance, service and rescue

The finalists of the 24th Military Deed of the Year Awards were announced today in the presence of members of the Cabinet, WW2 veterans and members of the Slovak Armed Forces. A panel of judges, led by President and Commander-in-Chief of the Slovak Armed Forces Zuzana Čaputová, considered the nominations across all Award categories.

Recalling the words of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik at the gala evening, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “May each of us be better today than yesterday and our country will be great and glorious. To be better, to do more – these are the acts the Military Deed of the Year is about and on Veterans Day we honour those who have performed them.”

According to Minister Naď, although the stories recognised in the Military Deed of the Year Awards are diverse, they share two common attributes – humanity and readiness to do more, whether it be assisting the public and the Armed Forces Community or rescuing a life. Despite the intensity of their deployments, Mr Naď praised the numerous nominations for servicemen and women who went out of their way to do ultimate acts of assistance, service and rescue over and above business as usual. “I would like to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart,” he stressed.

The winners of the Award in the Assistance to the Public category were Capt Ladislav Parma, Capt Viktor Frančiak, Maj (Res) Ondrej Hlavatý, and members of 1 Anti-Aircraft Missile Group for their selfless and all-inclusive support to their oncological colleague who found himself in a difficult situation.

In the Service to the Country category, the Award went to MSgt Radek Belan for maintaining the highest standards with respect to all the professional duties. In his nomination, he was recognised for his unique way of approaching, leading and motivating trainee soldiers in basic military training.

The Award laureate in the Friend of the Armed Forces category was Richard Koky, an ex-serviceman, for building civil-military relations, raising awareness of military history, and cooperating with soldiers in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in the marginalised Roma settlements, especially as a field expert of the Healthy Communities National Project and an employee of the Healthy Regions Agency (Department of Health).

1Lt Ladislav of 5 Special Forces Regiment Žilina was named the Award laureate in the Rescue of Life category for saving a woman seriously injured in a car crash and preventing her from bleeding to death by applying a tourniquet.

At the invitation of Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď, the Military Deed of the Year Awards Ceremony was attended by Foreign and European Affairs Minister Ivan Korčok, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security Juraj Krúpa, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer, Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko, representatives of the Diplomatic Service, veterans, friends of the Ministry of Defence, and servicemen and women.

On the occasion of Veterans Day, the Military Deed of the Year Awards Ceremony was rebroadcast by Slovakia's national RTVS Channel.
