Slovak Armed Forces enjoy growing public trust and confidence

The Slovak Armed Forces have enjoyed the highest levels of public trust and confidence over the past years. Currently, over 77% per cent of the Slovak public, aged 18 and over, trust our Armed Forces. This follows on from the public opinion survey conducted on 14-24 October 2021 by FOCUS Ltd for the Ministry of Defence. The opinion survey involved a total of 1220 respondents in the form of personal interviews.

While 71.5% of the adult population trusted our troops in 2019, trust in the Slovak military rose close to 73% in 2020. The latest all-time high means an annual increase of 4.5%. This manifestly demonstrates a stable increase in the trust and confidence of the public in the Slovak Armed Forces.

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The data mirrors the excellent work of our servicemen and women and their sincere and soulful service to our country and citizens. In the eyes of the public, they have also risen to the challenge of combating the pandemic. They have clearly demonstrated they are ready to deploy in support of our citizens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I am very pleased that the public can perceive it.“

The growing confidence levels were appreciated by Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko, saying: ”I am delighted that our efforts are reflected in positive figures. Our service personnel have ceased to be an entity that is unknown to the public and that is hidden behind the walls of the barracks. I strongly believe that we will maintain public favour and that our servicemen and women will always be there where they are most needed.“

The opinion survey also shows how the public perceive the Slovak Armed Forces. Of respondents, 88.7% now say that Slovakia needs the Slovak Armed Forces, three fourths (75%) are convinced that the Slovak Armed Forces guarantee the security and defence of the State, and the same number of respondents agree with the statement that SVK military personnel are well trained. On the other hand, only a little bit more than half of respondents think that the Armed Forces are equipped with advanced combat systems.

91.6% consider Slovakia's defence capability to be important, while the largest proportion of respondents see the guarantee of Slovakia's outer security in keeping good neighbourly relationships and in our membership in the EU and NATO.

When asked about the greatest security threats to Slovakia, respondents agree that these include organised crime, immigration in Europe, international terrorism, corruption in state and public institutions, dependence on energy and food imports, and the spread of infectious viruses.
